SUMMARY:Reimagining Chaos and Creation: The Challenge of Proclamation in an Age of Global Despair
DESCRIPTION:“To obtain such faith God instituted the office of preaching\, giving the gospel and the sacraments. Through these\, as through means\, he gives the Holy Spirit who produces faith\, where and when he wills\, in those who hear the gospel.” Augsburg Confession\, article\, V.   \nCreation\, the imagination of God for a place alive with sacred beauty\, is a speech act. God breathes and speaks a Word that inspires order from chaos. What imaginative word are we called to proclaim amid the disorders and chaos of our present lived experience\, that reflects the will of the creator of life? What role does proclamation play in organizing public life and what are the responsibilities\, ethical demands\, and boundaries? What are the barriers and concerns we need to overcome in order to make coherent public announcement of the alternative divine reality imagined by the prophets and by Jesus?   \nThe Rev. Dr. Matthew Lenahan is launching a preaching cohort for faith leaders interested in regular weekly\, monthly\, and/or seasonal discussion around the preaching task and the ecological crisis. The cohort(s) will meet at the Wittel Farm house\, 1753 Mill Road\, Elizabethtown.  \nThe intention of the cohort is to build skills\, practices\, and language for the craft of proclamation as a viable and necessary public expression of hope; not as false optimism but as concrete possibility marked by personal and institutional transformations. Preachers are change agents.  What tools do we need to become storytellers of liberation\, justice\, and peacemaking? How do we speak with courage\, conviction\, and commitment against all of the discouragement\, cynicism\, and indifference we see in public life? How do we talk about doom\, collapse scenarios\, climate science\, broken political and economic systems\, and an alternative way of living in human community? How do we bring hope and joy into proclamation that does not sound false? How do we do this as Lutherans?   \nSaturday\, December 6th. 9:00 am to 3:00: Cohort Launch Retreat that frames the preaching role within our social context. What is the role of preaching in an age of doubt\, uncertainty\, and institutional rejection?   \nHow do we exercise a public voice/witness that addresses the larger social challenges in front of us with good news\, hope\, and joy?  \nWhat is the Word to the world regarding climate change\, declining democracy\, vast economic inequality\, and the existential threats both visible and invisible?  \nCalendar for the year will be determined and shared at the retreat. (Likely both monthly and seasonal rhythms).  \nCost: retreat day\, $20.00.\nAnnual cohort: $180.00\nRegister here: COHORT 25. \n\nSome of the wisdom resources we will enjoy: \n\nEarth Gospel\, Sam Hamilton-Poore\nLife After Doom\, Brian McLaren\nCreation-Crisis Preaching: Ecology\, Theology\, and the Pulpit\, Leah Shade The Great Search:Turning to Earth and Soul in the Quest for Healing and Home\, John Philip Newell\nClimate Church\, Climate World\, Jim Antal\nDevotions\, Mary Oliver\nRefugia Faith\, Debra Reinstra\nWe will also have special guests joining us for some cohort sessions

SUMMARY:ALIVE (Synod Event)
DESCRIPTION:This is a Lower Susquehanna Synod sponsored event. More information can be found at https://www.lss-elca.org/alive/ \n\nThere’s nothing quite like a weekend of authentic community with Christian friends in the fall at Camp Nawakwa. Join us for ALIVE\, our event for middle-school youth and advisors\, scheduled for September 26-28\, 2025\, at Camp Nawakwa. Youth who are entering grades 6-8\, are eligible to attend with their congregation advisors. It’s a great way to begin the new school year immersed in a loving community of Lutheran peers and leaders. Registration opens in March\, so please consider adding it to your fall youth ministry calendars\, now. \nCongregational youth leaders are encouraged to register their youth using our digital registration portal. The event fee is $142/person for the full weekend. You can opt to pay the $50 deposit or to pay for the event in full with a credit card\, when you register. If you’d prefer\, you can choose the ‘invoice’ option. The invoice will be sent by email to the primary leader\, so you can print and have a check prepared and mailed from your treasurer to the synod office. Visit our website for details\, history of the event\, and printable pdf forms to help you inform parents and promote the event to your congregation and families: https://www.lss-elca.org/alive/. We encourage to begin talking with families of current 5th graders now. \nOur theme\, ‘Better Together’ dives into our Lutheran understanding of being part of a larger community of Christ. Drawing upon some of the Rev Dr Martin Luther King Jr’s understanding of the ‘beloved community’ and the value of every human being\, we will explore how being united to Christ and others\, deepens and enriches our lives. Fun\, fellowship\, campfies\, faith formation and inspired worship all highlight this annual fall event. We hope you’ll make it part of your youth group year! \nRead more… \n

SUMMARY:Harrisburg Area Confirmation Camp
DESCRIPTION:Learn more at: http://harrisburgconfirmationcamp.org/ \n\nThe Harrisburg Area Confirmation Camp\, serves approximately 30+ congregations that attend from various conferences\, across our synod. Between 250-300 youth and their congregational advisors gather each year for one week in June\, to explore the ways God is calling them into a life of discipleship in the world. \nPastors and congregational youth workers and volunteers comprise the event staff\, and serve alongside college-aged students who assist as small group discussion leaders alongside adult staff\, and as cabin counselors. Youth in grades 7-12\, can participate in one of a number of curriculum tracks: \nPathfinders (7th grade)\nSaints (8th grade)\nGod’s Gifted People (9th grade)\nMaturing in the Body of Christ (10th grade)\nLeadership Training (11th Grade)\nCounselors (12th grade+college undergrads) \nEach track has a week-long curriculum\, led by adult staff and counselors\, meeting primarily in small groups\, but the week is highlighted by all-camp worship on a daily basis\, along with all-camp games\, activities\, campfires\, and opportunities for fellowship and peer-to-peer learning. While the overall theme of the week focuses on what it means to be a baptized Child of God in today’s world\, each track focuses on a different aspect of our development as disciples of Jesus Christ. \nStarted in the early 70’s as a cooperative ministry of Harrisburg city Lutheran churches\, the camp now has participating congregations from a variety of conferences\, but still bears the original name. To learn more about the different tracks\, about the 40+ year history of this camp\, or to find out how to become a member congregation\, visit their website at: http://harrisburgconfirmationcamp.org/
