What compelled the Lutheran Camping Corporation of Central PA (LCC) to purchase this land at this time?
In 1928 the Rev. Dr. Hadwin Fischer asked an influential group of Lutheran leaders to imagine an innovative outdoor ministry that would encourage faith formation, Lutheran leadership development, and careful stewardship of our natural resources. That initial vision has touched countless lives for more than 75 years.
About 2 ½ years ago, the LCC board developed a long range strategic plan that will continue that legacy of faithful and creative ministry in outdoor settings. At the top of that list was expansion of Camp Nawakwa, outside of Arendtsville, Pa. Then two years ago, 221 acres adjacent to the site became available. We invite you to exercise your IMAGINATION to see all of the possibilities God has placed before us!

What is the purpose of the IMAGINE…Capital Campaign?
This exciting endeavor will cover the cost of the new land. It will support proper stewardship and responsible use of the new land in present and future summer programs. It will also provide funds to expand and enhance our ability to offer hosted retreats and sponsored adult/family programs.

What is the financial goal of the campaign?
The goal has been set in three tiers – the Acquisition Goal at $1.6 Million, the Victory Goal at the $2.0 Million level and the Celebration Goal when we go over $2.5 Million. You may contact our Director of Development for the progress to date towards these goals.

Will all of the money given to the IMAGINE…Capital Campaign go to the Nawakwa site?
This capital campaign is designated for the land purchase and development of facilities and ministries connected to that acquisition. Of course, other donations to the LCC that are designated for other parts of the LCC’s ministry will be used only as the donor indicates. They will not used toward the financial goals of the IMAGINE…Capital Campaign.

Will this new land and new facilities be available to constituencies across the Lower Susquehanna (LS) Synod?
As has always been the case, the LCC will continue to serve individuals, groups, and congregations from the entire synod, as well as others who are outside of the LS Synod territory and/or outside of the Lutheran “family”. This new land and all new facilities will be used in ongoing programs and newly developed ministries, as well as being available on a first-come, first-serve rental basis, under the same guidelines as present facilities.

What buildings and facilities are being planned? Are drawings and sketches available?
Meeting the IMAGINE…Capital Campaign’s Celebration Goal will launch us toward a significantly expanded ministry to adults/families with new retreat facilities on the new land. We envision facilities with higher quality dining, fellowship and meeting spaces, and private bathrooms. They could be under one roof or there could be a group of smaller sleeping buildings in connection with a larger central lodge.
Although no particular design has been chosen as yet, the LCC Board of Directors will be sharing more information as plans become more concrete. In the meantime, they are interested in hearing what outdoor ministry proponents imagine… such facilities might look like. Please pass along your suggestions and ideas to the LCC Executive Director and/or Board of Directors through the Camping Office or by email.

I already give money to the LCC. Won’t that money go toward this project?
No. Current operating costs will continue and even increase as Nawakwa grows. The first funds raised in this capital campaign will be used to cover the cost of the new land. Monies beyond the acquisition goal will be used as outlined above. Your donations for the annual budget are still very important to the LCC’s success. Gifts directed to this campaign should be considered “over and above” contributions toward the regular annual appeal.

What is the time line for the IMAGINE…Capital Campaign?
The purchase of the new land was completed on December 31, 2007. Contributions to the campaign have been received since that time. We are asking that contributors consider making their gifts over a period of three years (although that is not a requirement). Various materials to explain the campaign and enable donations are available from the camp office and at our website www.lutherancamping.org. Congregations of the Lower Susquehanna Synod will be approached beginning in the spring of 2008 with the request that they consider making a three year financial commitment to the campaign.

How can I help with the IMAGINE…Capital Campaign?
Please be in prayer for the LCC and its ministry during this campaign. As mentioned above, materials such as commitment cards and envelopes for your use are available upon request. Share your excitement for the LCC and its ministry with others. We would be happy to receive suggestions and referrals concerning others who may want to join you in making a financial commitment to our outdoor ministry. Please contact our Director of Development. You can contact him at 717-677-8211 or through our website.

What size gifts do you need? What kind of assets can I use to make my gift?
In order to reach our Celebration Goal, we will need many gifts of various sizes, ranging from small one-time amounts into multi-year gifts of hundreds of thousands. All together will make us successful – every one is important. Gifts can be made using cash, checks, credit/debit cards, or direct deposit. You can also use a variety of planned gift instruments such as charitable gift annuities or charitable trusts. Gifts-in-kind can also be given in support of the development of facilities and supporting infrastructure. Once again, our Director of Development will be happy to discuss the possibilities at your convenience.
